Anyone installed those neon lights under their rig for thet "floating" effect. My kids kee pwatching trick my truck and they think its cool and we should have it! Is there any laws against using them?

I spoke to a CA Highway Patrol Officer and asked your question.

Neon lights are illegal on the machine. Even the ones that surround the license plates.

I think the officer said to look at the vehicle code book which has the requirements for lights. It probably says that stop lights must be red, turn signals must be red or amber, back up lights white, license plate lights white...

Even those blue lights that the young kids install on their hoods are illegal. If the CHP sees them, they can pull you over for a fix it ticket...

I guess the police don't want to see a Truck Conversion barrelling down the freeway at 65mph with a look like it's floating down the road??? Eek

Don't know what's wrong with that. I think it would look cool and there's a lot of square footage that would be available for that "floating look." Smile

MN has a traffic statute that says any lighting that isn't certified by the Commissioner of Transportation is illegal. No neon lights are certified, except the high center brake lights on some older Ford Explorers that were. You can certainly use them on private property, just can't drive down the road with them lit up. I think they look cool too but I'd put them under the cabinets and furniture to light the way at night inside the rig.

Last time I looked it up in Ohio, their particular set of rules were:
1)no blue lights period
2)no flashing lights period
3)neon lights (the actual tube)cannot be seen, but the glow is undefinable (you can get away with it)
4)red lenses should face the rear
5)white lenses with colored elements(including red)are illegal unless OEM
6)maximum wattage for any light 55 watts

This was a few years ago and Ohio gets their jollies by changing the rules.
